Most of my students know every time we close our yoga practice we chant the sacred sound OM. You probably have seen the symbol many times by now and maybe you have even seen it spelt Aum.
So some of you have asked which is it, OM or Aum?

Well to make it simple both are correct!

When we chant Aum in my yoga classes it would be spelt like this, AUM because we draw out the sound as long as possible with our breath. The sound symbolizes infinite consciousness and plays a role in opening our heart centres.

When we use a mantra with a short sounding OM it is spelt like this, OM. An example is “Om Namah Shivaya” The Om
Sound is not drawn out here.

The important thing to remember is that chanting Om/Aum/Oooommmm is beneficial to our wellbeing no matter how you spell it.

Want to learn more about the sacred sound and symbol of OM? Let me know. I Love geeking it out on Sanskrit!
